Lịch sử Phật giáo ghi: " Vừa sinh ra, Thái tử đã đi bảy bước, dưới mỗi bước chân nở một đóa sen nâng gót. Đến bước cuối cùng, tay chỉ trời, tay chỉ đất, Ngài dõng dạc cất cao tiếng sư tử hống: Trên trời dưới trời, Ta là bậc tôn quý hơn cả... ”.
